A Different Kind of King
In many Christian cultures, the day of the Epiphany of Our Lord is known as “Three Kings Day.” Special celebrations that include foods associated with the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus happen around the globe as the “new King” is welcomed by His subjects. Jesus is no ordinary King. He is the “King Most Wonderful” as Bernard of Clairvaux (LSB 554), who lived some 1,100 years ago, expressed it in poetic verse. Today we bring our gifts and come to worship that King, rejoicing in His blessed rule among us.

Two Promises For a New Year
The murder of the infant boys of Bethlehem reminds us that nothing can prevent God from accomplishing His purpose, especially when that purpose is redeeming us from sin and its death and bestowing upon us everlasting life. Hidden in Bethlehem’s sorrow is the mercy of God. To voices crying from the pain of death come too soon, He gives the gift of life that death cannot steal. This is what Jesus is born to accomplish, and in Egypt He is kept safe for this saving work so that we and the infant sons of Bethlehem may rejoice in life stronger than death.

    Eternal Light
In the beginning, when the universe was dark and void, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Into the darkness of this world’s sin and death, God sent His Son to be the light of the world. God has called us out of the darkness into His marvelous light. Because of Jesus we can experience the light of God’s eternal love. “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the sky above” (Dan. 12:3).

    What Are You Hoping For?
The Advent season has an expectation not only of the coming Christmas celebration, but of the end of this fallen world and the remaking of creation. What do you hope will happen then? According to Paul, in today’s Epistle, when the Messiah returns, the world will live without conflict. God certainly helps us in the Church to live in harmony with one another, but by ourselves we cannot do that, we cannot hope for any change. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ, who is glorified in the Church with one voice. Hope in Him!

    Get Ready, Get Set… Wait
Advent is a gracious time of preparation for Jesus’ coming, once in history, to us in Word and Sacrament today, and at the end of time. When our Lord returns, it will be to usher in the kingdom of God, which Isaiah says will be so peaceful they will “beat their swords into plowshares.” Before that day, preparing means leading loving lives, Paul tells us, for “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” Look out! The King comes!

    Crown Him with Many Crowns
The disciples on Good Friday could not understand how God could let Jesus the Messiah be cruelly executed. And we wonder about the world’s state of affairs today. The people calling for Jesus’ death thought they knew what they were doing, but we know what was going on: God was bringing about the forgiveness that our Lord promised the thief on the cross next to Him, the paradise He was opening for us and all believers. Christ “is the image of the invisible God.” Seeing Him, we understand God’s eternal love. And one of these days, it will be our “today” to be with Him in paradise.

    Generosity is the Hallmark
As people of God, we know that everything we are and everything we have comes from God. The apostle Paul wrote, “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God” (2 Cor. 9:11). As stewards of the gifts of God, we willingly, joyfully, and generously share them with others. Through your faithful giving, God blesses others, He blesses you, the giver, and He receives praise and glory.

    Discipleship is the Path
If we want to “Live a God-Pleasing Life,” our lives are no longer our own. We live them in complete obedience to Christ! “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal. 2:20). Today we consider what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ and to follow Him with our lives.

    Faith Is the Foundation
Through Word and Sacrament and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God has worked faith in our hearts. We believe and trust in Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer. In response to the gift of faith that God has given, we do the works that He has sent us to do. “Show me your faith without deeds,” says James, “and I will show you my faith by what I do” (James 2:18). Stewardship is faith in action. It is an expression of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
