A Different Kind of King

In many Christian cultures, the day of the Epiphany of Our Lord is known as “Three Kings Day.” Special celebrations that include foods associated with the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus happen around the globe as the “new King” is welcomed by His subjects. Jesus is no ordinary King. He is the “King Most Wonderful” as Bernard of Clairvaux (LSB 554), who lived some 1,100 years ago, expressed it in poetic verse. Today we bring our gifts and come to worship that King, rejoicing in His blessed rule among us.

And we wonder about the world’s state of affairs today. The people calling for Jesus’ death thought they knew what they were doing, but we know what was going on: God was bringing about the forgiveness that our Lord promised the thief on the cross next to Him, the paradise He was opening for us and all believers. Christ “is the image of the invisible God.” Seeing Him, we understand God’s eternal love. And one of these days, it will be our “today” to be with Him in paradise.

We believe and trust in Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer. In response to the gift of faith that God has given, we do the works that He has sent us to do. “Show me your faith without deeds,” says James, “and I will show you my faith by what I do” (James 2:18). Stewardship is faith in action. It is an expression of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
