Facing Temptation
Today is the First Sunday in Lent as we make our annual journey with Christ to the cross. Though the Sundays in Lent are not technically part of this somber season, they do reflect the same penitential theme that characterizes our forty days of prayerful devotion and repentance. Today we watch as Jesus faces the slick lies of the tempter. He does not face them on His own but in the strength and power of God’s Word and truth. We who live by faith in Christ are also made strong in the Word of the Lord before the devil’s lies and temptations.

Jan 26, 2020Light in the DarknessIn today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us how four of the disciples of the Lord were called. In some ways, Peter and Andrew, James and John were unlikely choices. They were not students of the Scriptures or from the nobility of Jerusalem. But Jesus had plans for them. Immediately they left their nets—and it made all the difference in their lives. Hearing the call of Jesus makes a difference in our lives as well. We, too, may be unlikely choices of our Lord. But He has great plans for each of us as well.
