The Wisdom of the Cross
The Gospel message is considered foolishness by many people today. Many skeptics and unbelievers refuse to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the only way to heaven. But with St. Paul we believe that Christ crucified is our “righteousness, holiness, and redemption” (1 Cor.1:31). We boldly proclaim the message about our crucified and risen Savior to our church and community. We rejoice that Lutheran Hour Ministries continues to share the Gospel message throughout the world!

    Light in the Darkness
In today’s Gospel, Matthew tells us how four of the disciples of the Lord were called. In some ways, Peter and Andrew, James and John were unlikely choices. They were not students of the Scriptures or from the nobility of Jerusalem. But Jesus had plans for them. Immediately they left their nets—and it made all the difference in their lives. Hearing the call of Jesus makes a difference in our lives as well. We, too, may be unlikely choices of our Lord. But He has great plans for each of us as well.

    Did God Really Say?
Today we join congregations across the country in observing “Sanctity of Human Life Sunday.” The theme is “Did God Really Say?” which is based on Isaiah 49:1, “Before I was born the Lord called me; from my birth he has made mention of my name.” The powerful Word of God made this world and everything in it. The Word of God also declares that all human life is sacred. You are beloved, no matter how young. You belong, no matter how old.

    Connected to Christ
The First Sunday after the Epiphany takes us in mind and heart to the Jordan River, where Jesus is baptized. This day, observed each year in the Church, is a reminder of the importance of Baptism in the life of every Christian, for it is in dying with Christ through Baptism that we are born anew to eternal life. Through Baptism, we are connected to Christ and given a whole new way of living for time and for eternity. “But I am baptized!” Martin Luther would exclaim when life situations seemed overwhelming. Knowing that we live daily in baptismal grace makes the difference in our lives as well.

    A Different Kind of King
In many Christian cultures, the day of the Epiphany of Our Lord is known as “Three Kings Day.” Special celebrations that include foods associated with the visit of the Magi to the baby Jesus happen around the globe as the “new King” is welcomed by His subjects. Jesus is no ordinary King. He is the “King Most Wonderful” as Bernard of Clairvaux (LSB 554), who lived some 1,100 years ago, expressed it in poetic verse. Today we bring our gifts and come to worship that King, rejoicing in His blessed rule among us.

Two Promises For a New Year
The murder of the infant boys of Bethlehem reminds us that nothing can prevent God from accomplishing His purpose, especially when that purpose is redeeming us from sin and its death and bestowing upon us everlasting life. Hidden in Bethlehem’s sorrow is the mercy of God. To voices crying from the pain of death come too soon, He gives the gift of life that death cannot steal. This is what Jesus is born to accomplish, and in Egypt He is kept safe for this saving work so that we and the infant sons of Bethlehem may rejoice in life stronger than death.

    Eternal Light
In the beginning, when the universe was dark and void, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Into the darkness of this world’s sin and death, God sent His Son to be the light of the world. God has called us out of the darkness into His marvelous light. Because of Jesus we can experience the light of God’s eternal love. “Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the sky above” (Dan. 12:3).

    What Are You Hoping For?
The Advent season has an expectation not only of the coming Christmas celebration, but of the end of this fallen world and the remaking of creation. What do you hope will happen then? According to Paul, in today’s Epistle, when the Messiah returns, the world will live without conflict. God certainly helps us in the Church to live in harmony with one another, but by ourselves we cannot do that, we cannot hope for any change. Our only hope is in Jesus Christ, who is glorified in the Church with one voice. Hope in Him!

    Get Ready, Get Set… Wait
Advent is a gracious time of preparation for Jesus’ coming, once in history, to us in Word and Sacrament today, and at the end of time. When our Lord returns, it will be to usher in the kingdom of God, which Isaiah says will be so peaceful they will “beat their swords into plowshares.” Before that day, preparing means leading loving lives, Paul tells us, for “salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.” Look out! The King comes!
