Crown Him with Many Crowns

The disciples on Good Friday could not understand how God could let Jesus the Messiah be cruelly executed. And we wonder about the world’s state of affairs today. The people calling for Jesus’ death thought they knew what they were doing, but we know what was going on: God was bringing about the forgiveness that our Lord promised the thief on the cross next to Him, the paradise He was opening for us and all believers. Christ “is the image of the invisible God.” Seeing Him, we understand God’s eternal love. And one of these days, it will be our “today” to be with Him in paradise.

Stewardship is faith in action. It is an expression of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In speaking of the message of the Reformation, Martin Luther stated: “All I have written and taught has been according to my conscience and sworn duty as a humble teacher of the Holy Scripture, for the praise of God, for the benefit and salvation of all Christendom, and for the good of the entire German nation” (WLS § 3775). He knew the message was much more than the man. He wanted his hearers to be assured of their salvation, which is alone in Christ, the Messiah. Through his sermons and hymn texts and writings, he presented the Gospel simply and directly. Today we honor and celebrate his faithful rediscovery of that Good News!

In the Gospel lesson for today, Jesus heals ten lepers, but only one of the men comes back to thank Jesus. Do we thank God every day for His goodness and blessing? Or do we take for granted all the gifts and blessings the Lord has granted to us. We have received much more than healing from a physical ailment. We have received in Jesus Christ cleansing from sin and a restored life that will never end. For that we owe Him our never-ending thanks and praise!

We find ourselves caught between competing loyalties all the time. It is a gut-wrenching position; torn between two people, two causes, two goals. When the conflict is between mammon (money) and the Kingdom of God, there is a more painful choice at stake. If we choose the kingdom of the moment with its fleeting pleasures and momentary glories, we forsake what is God's eternal gift. Today, the Lord calls us to take seriously the choices. He beckons us to live in the world but not be of the world, to choose the eternal over the moment, and the true treasure of grace over earthly treasure.
